Land is measured in Rais in Samui Island
If you intend to invest in land in Samui Island, you should be aware of the fact that it is measured in Rais, where one rai is about 1600 square meters. If you want smaller plots, they are available at measurements of Ngans, which is about 400 square meters or the Wah, which is 4 square meters. It is possible for non-Thai nationals to buy land or a house on Samui Island on a thirty year lease where the contract can be written to include terms for extension of the lease period.
If you want to sell the property in the future, you find it is rather easy to sell the property to another foreigner or Thai national. If you wish to live full time in Samui Island, or Thailand, then you could set up a Thai company where you get the right to buy the land on an outright sale.

Though foreigners in Samui Island are permitted to own only 49% of the company, you have the right to exercise sole control on the company and property. This ensures the security of the investment.
