There are also many trains plying to and from Bangkok to Surat Thani. You can grab a train to reach Surat Thani and then drive for an hour to the ferry pier to catch a boat to reach Koh Samui. It is better to take the sleeper trains where you sleep at night and reach Surat Thani in the morning.
You need not go through the trouble of booking train, bus and boat tickets to reach Samui. The many travel agents found in Bangkok and Koh Samui will make all the necessary arrangements for train, boat and bus to and from Koh Samui. The rates depend on whether you want 1st, 2nd or 3rd class train tickets; while the most reasonable and decent option is a 2nd class air conditioned train ticket.
Sleep on buses to Koh Samui
The buses to use to reach Koh Samui all leave from the Southern Bus Terminal of Bangkok. These buses are divided into private and government buses where it is better to take one of the VIP buses to reach Samui Island. This is because these buses have fewer seats which can be reclined to a somewhat sleeping position. These buses leave in early evening. It is always better for you to buy a ticket that includes the ferry ride cost in its ticket price to Samui.
The same options are available for taking the bus back to reach Bangkok; where there are different class buses leaving Samui at different times of the day.
