At 247 square kilometers, Koh Samui is the largest, and one of only six inhabited islands. A coastal road runs around the island for some 50 kilometers and links the many beaches and bays.

Koh Samui - Grandfather Stone near Lamai Beach

The famous Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks near Lamai Beach have become a tourist attraction because of their phallic shape (this means they are shaped like a penis). From here, a great view along the beach of Lamai can be had.
The sea around the rock outcrop is also especially suited for snorkelers and dive beginners, because there are large sand banks between the stone formations. A large variety of underwater life can be observed.

Big Buddha Temple on Koh Samui

A very standard sight on any 'round island tour is the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) on Koh Samui's north coast.
The 12 meter high Buddha sits on a small islet connected to the big island by an unpaved causeway.
Entering the temple, you first come to a large paved courtyard with a dragon stairway on the other side. Flanking the stairs are two small pavilions housing smaller Buddha images. The stairs lead you up to the platform on which the Buddha image sits. From the platform you get some good views of the long beach where the islet sits.

Chaweng Beach restaurants in Koh Samui

Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui offers a multitude of restaurants for dining out.
One set of options is a line of small restaurants right on the beach. Some are little more than shacks with open sides facing the sea. Some don't even seem to have names. Most have seating right on the beach, and even beach chairs.
The sand here is especially fine and soft, making this a great place for a late lunch and lounge on the beach. These are inexpensive places where a main course may run from THB 100 to 150.
